Hollywood loves nothing more than McCarthy-era cosplay, and they have a good excuse.
The 1950s-era attempt to expunge Communism from the government reached into Hollywood’s inner sanctum.
Screenwriters saw their careers crushed by allegations of Communist sympathies, and “Spartacus” scribe Dalton Trumbo emerged as the symbol of that overreach.
It explains why we’ve seen the following Blacklist-themed films spun from Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s campaign:
- “Guilty by Suspicion”
- “Trumbo”
- “The Front”
- “The Majestic”
- “The Way We Were”
- “Good Night, and Good Luck”
And we’ll soon see Michael Shannon portray the title character in “McCarthy.”

Yet Hollywood, Inc. has stayed silent as a similar sentiment swamps western culture today. Government-fueled censorship is the new normal, as exposed by The Twitter Files. Cancel Culture runs amok, forcing comedians to self-censor or else.
A-listers like Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, George Clooney and Michael B. Jordan have nothing to say on the matter.
It’s why Rob Schneider is such a refreshing exception.

The “Deuce Bigalow” star is on the front lines of the free speech fight, ignoring how his Hollywood peers refuse to defend the First Amendment. He stands up for artistic freedom in media appearances and via social media.
This week, Schneider excoriated Democrats for their shocking, fact-free attacks on journalists who helped expose the government’s attempts to silence speech – Matt Taibbi and Michael Shellenberger.

Schneider is one of a very select group of artists lashing out at McCarthy-style censorship. The pushback often flows from the comedy community. Joe Rogan, Russell Brand and Bill Maher have similarly spoken out against Big Tech censorship, media corruption and more.
Their words matter, but we need more Hollywood stars to join them, to warn sane, center-Left Americans that the First Amendment, and the American experiment itself, are fading before our eyes.
This weekend’s Oscars ceremony would be the ideal platform for just such a stand. Don’t hold your breath waiting for it to happen, alas.
