Luigi Mangione became an overnight sensation for too many progressives.
He didn’t win an election or embarrass a GOP senator.
Mangione allegedly shot and killed a healthcare CEO in cold blood. That’s all he needed to become a 21st-century folk hero. That, and killer abs.

Now, a San Francisco-based play is expanding on Mangione’s legend, and local patrons can’t get enough of it. It’s called, what else, “Luigi: The Musical.” SF Gate has the details.
Directed by Nova Bradford, the production is set in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where rapper Sean Combs (Janée Lucas), fallen crypto tycoon Sam Bankman-Fried (André Margatini), and the internet’s favorite murder suspect Luigi Mangione (Jonny Stein) were all held this year — at the same time. The musical has now extended its run to 10 shows after constant sellouts. At the show I saw, dozens of people stood against the walls after every seat had been filled.
It’s a hit!
The critic admits the show has a decidedly pro-Mangione bent but doesn’t fully endorse violence. Phew.
The production doesn’t have all the answers, and that’s OK — the moral ambiguity is part of the fun.
Yes, it’s not exactly clear if we should root for someone who allegedly killed a father and husband because he’s a very small cog in an admittedly broken health care system.
This isn’t the only time pop culture progressives praised Mangione. The host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” shared how some show staffers swooned over the alleged killer shortly after his arrest. “The Daily Show” audience also expressed sympathy for Mangione, shocking even the show’s far-Left host at the time.
Comedian Bill Burr has repeatedly chanted “Free Luigi,” although it’s unclear if it’s simply a laugh line or has a bigger meaning. Burr has straddled the line between the Right and Left with his comedy over the years. In recent months, he’s been actively courting progressives.
