“The Passion of the Christ” shocked the world in 2004.
The era’s faith-based films were low-budget affairs with stars who rarely graced mainstream movies. They appeared rough around the edges in more ways than one.
That’s being kind.
Mel Gibson changed all of that. His “Passion” became a blockbuster, earning $610 million worldwide and sparking a culture war over faith, representation and Gibson himself.
Next year, Gibson returns with “The Resurrection of the Christ.” It’s one of the most eagerly anticipated projects in recent memory, and the star/director has turned the evolving project into not one but two sequels.
We’ll soon get our first look at the films, courtesy of Fathom Entertainment.
A remastered, 4K version of “The Passion of the Christ” hits theaters starting Sept. 10-17. The edition will include not just the feature film but a glimpse at “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One.”
The film recast Jesus Christ after Gibson toyed with bringing back original star Jim Caviezel and de-aging him with CGI. Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen takes over as Jesus in the sequels.
“The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One” doesn’t hit theaters until May 6, but audiences will get an exclusive, behind-the-scenes sneak peek at it as part of the re-release.

The sequel, according to Fathom PR, “tells the story of Christ’s victory over death after His greatest sacrifice—a moment that forever changed the course of humanity and continues one of history’s most consequential and enduring stories.”
Faith-friendly stories have evolved since “Christ” hit theaters 22 years ago. We’ve seen bigger stars cast in Christian features (Alan Ritchson, Ben Kingsley, John Lithgow) and major streamers now embrace the genre.
Netflix’s “Ruth & Boaz” is just one example. “House of David” is a Prime Video hit, while “The Chosen” remains a Christian TV powerhouse.
That show’s sixth season is set to debut Nov. 15 on Prime Video.

The show, and many recent hits like “Jesus Revolution” and “I Can Only Imagine,” might not have been possible if not for “The Passion of the Christ.”
