Being a pretend cop has real perks for the Broken Lizard squad.
The troupe is responsible for rowdy comedies like “Beerfest” (2006) and “The Slammin’ Salmon” (2009), but they’re best known for the “Super Troopers” series.
The newest film in the franchise, “Super Troopers 3,” is playing in theaters now.
The prank-filled comedies find their Vermont lawmen disobeying the rules early and often. It’s why the comedies quickly became cult hits.
And, along the way, some real cops have bonded with their good-natured shtick.
Just ask Kevin Heffernan, who plays the loud-and-proud Farva in the series. Heffernan shared a story about an invitation to throw out the first pitch at a San Diego Padres home game during the group’s recent Denver visit.
The gang was promoting “Beerfest” at the time, but Heffernan confesses he was running a bit late for the prime gig. The game’s first pitch waits for no one.
So he put the pedal to the metal in grand Farva fashion. That caught the attention of a real-life police officer.
Cue the sirens.
“Where you going in such a hurry?” the cop asked him. When Heffernan explained his problem, the officer didn’t exactly light up in recognition.

The real trooper went back to the squad car for a moment, only to return in a different frame of mind.
“You need an escort to the stadium?” the officer asked. Score one for the Super Troopers.
Heffernan made the game in time and bumped into another cop on duty inside the stadium.
“’We were worried. It went over the radio that Farva got pulled over,’” the officer told him.
It wasn’t the quintet’s only brush with Johnny Law. One time, the Broken Lizard members were traveling together when they got pulled over.
The officer in question looked into the car, saw five Super Troopers, and “looked like he was gonna vomit,” co-star Steve Lemme recalled.
Once again, no ticket.
That “Super Troopers” card isn’t foolproof, though. Co-star Erik Stolhanske said he played it once while driving solo and the results were … different.
“I played a cop in a movie once,” Stolhanske told the officer. “He wrote me a ticket [anyway].”
