Gina Carano got canceled for sharing the “wrong” opinions on social media.
Roseanne Barr lost her iconic sitcom for one ugly, racially-charged Tweet.
Country superstar Morgan Wallen’s career came to a screeching halt after he was caught using the “n-word” in a private conversation (but not against a black person).
Cancel Culture reigned over entertainment for years, sometimes obliterating careers in the process. What Elon Musk called the “woke mind virus” has ebbed in recent months.
President Donald Trump’s re-election is just one neon-bright example. So was last year’s Roast revival.
Could its flickering embers take down the first trans performer to snag a Best Actress Oscar nomination?
“Emilia Pérez” star Karla Sofia Gascón posted the following on Sept. 2, 2020, attached to a photo of a Muslim family in a restaurant, including a woman in a burka:
“Islam is marvelous, without any machismo. Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with… pic.twitter.com/3xEgZSsRQK

“Emilia Perez” star Karla Sofia Gascon is in hot water, according to legacy media outlets like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. The nominee’s past social media musings have “resurfaced,” and they’re far from progressive.
The posts in question clash with the arts community’s views, to put it mildly.
Gascon on Islam:
“I’m Sorry, Is it just my impression or is there more muslims in Spain? Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels. Next year instead of English we’ll have to teach Arabic.”
Gascon on the Oscars:
“More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films, I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M … Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala.”
Gascon on George Floyd’s death:
“I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys Without rights and consider policemen to be assassins … They’re all wrong.”
Oscar season teems with attacks on the various nominees and nominated films. It’s akin to a politician doing opposition research on his or her opponents. Sometimes the stars themselves make matters worse.
It can get ugly. Just ask the team behind “The Brutalist.”
Brady Corbet’s ‘The Brutalist’ sparked debate after revelations that generative AI was used in editing.

Will Gascon’s old messages impact the Best Actress race?
Hollywood has played a sizable role in keeping Cancel Culture kicking over the years. Its denizens rarely spoke out in favor of free speech principles. Some of the industry’s biggest stars refused to fight back against it, issuing “hostage”-style apologies for wrongthink instead.
Entertainment media similarly fed Culture Culture fires, lashing out at stars who said the “wrong” thing. They also refused to defend folks like Carano whose crime was holding disparate views shared by many decent Americans.
No actress of consequence study by Carano’s side, either.
It’s beyond ironic that a Hollywood progressive’s dream – Gascon becoming the first trans artist to win Best Actress – could crumble following a Cancel Culture assault.
